FERPA Consent to Release

At the post-secondary level, student education records may be released to a parent or other third party only under the following circumstances:

  • Through the consent of the student via FERPA Consent to Release established in the myUCCS Portal
  • In compliance with a subpoena
  • By submission of evidence that the parents declare the student as a dependent on their most recent Federal Income Tax form (IRS Code, Section 152).
  • Under the alcohol and controlled substance exception or in connection with a health and safety emergency under the circumstances set forth in § 99.36 (if the student is under 21 years of age)
  • FERPA Consent to Release allows a parent or authorized third party to contact the university on behalf of the student about educational or financial records only.  Note:  FERPA Consent to Release only applies to academic and financial records. Students: How to Grant Consent

  1. Log in to myUCCS Portal and expand the Records and Registration menu on the left side of the page.
  2. Under Records and Registration, click FERPA Consent to Release (Third Party Access to Education Record).
  3. Type in the first and last name of the person to whom you want to grant access and/or their organization (if applicable).
  4. Set a password that is unique to this specific parent or third party. They must provide it when contacting UCCS about your record.
  5. Select the records category you’d like them to be able to access and/or discuss.
  6. Click Save to see a confirmation message before moving on.
